How AI memory works, and how to stay in control of it
AI assistants remember in two ways. Short-term memory is the current conversation. Long-term memory is a separate store of facts, preferences and events the assistant saves on purpose and looks up later. Good long-term memory is visible to you, searchable by date, and easy to edit or delete.
Short-term: the conversation
Within a chat, an AI model sees the recent messages. That's why it can follow along, and also why it may forget older details in a very long chat or a new one.
Long-term: memories saved on purpose
Long-term memory is a separate list the assistant writes to when it learns something lasting, then searches when it needs it. Searching by meaning means "car service" can find "took the Civic to the garage", and saving dates lets it answer "when did I last…" questions.
In Slikie SI each memory is one clear sentence about you, saved once, with a date for events. All your Slikies share it.
Files are memory too
Documents you share hold details no one would type out: amounts, dates, clauses. Searching inside files lets an assistant answer from them and quote the passage, so you can check it.
Staying in control
Whatever assistant you use, look for:
- A page that shows everything it remembers.
- Editing and deleting that really removes things.
- Clear rules about who can see your memories and files.
Questions people ask
Does AI remember everything I say?
Not automatically. Assistants with long-term memory save selected lasting facts. In Slikie SI you can see every memory and delete any of it.
Can AI memory be wrong?
It can save something imprecise, which is why being able to see and edit memories matters.
