What is an AI agent? A plain-language guide
An AI agent is software that works toward a goal on its own instead of only answering one message. It plans the steps, uses tools (like web search, files or reminders), remembers what it learned, and reports back. Good agents also know when to stop and ask a person before doing anything important.
The four things that make an agent
Most definitions agree on four abilities.
- A goal: it works toward an outcome, not just a reply.
- Planning: it breaks the goal into steps and keeps track of them.
- Tools: it can act, for example search the web, read files, make documents or set reminders.
- Memory: it keeps what it learned, so the next job starts ahead.
Agents and people: who decides?
The more an agent can do, the more it matters what it's allowed to do alone. A well-designed agent reads and searches freely but stops for approval before anything with real consequences, such as messaging someone or spending money.
Slikie SI builds this in: some actions always wait for the owner's OK, owners set their own rules for the rest, and a second check reviews actions before they happen.
One agent or many?
Bigger jobs often go better with several agents that each take a part, like a small team. In Slikie SI they coordinate in a group chat called a Circle, which the owner can read and join, and the lead agent reports back with the result.
Where agents are useful today
Agents shine at work with several steps and a clear outcome: planning a trip within a budget, preparing a proposal, keeping track of renewals, or finding an answer buried in a pile of documents.
Questions people ask
Is ChatGPT an AI agent?
A chat assistant becomes agent-like when it can plan, use tools and act toward a goal. The term describes those abilities more than a specific product.
Are AI agents safe?
They're as safe as the limits around them. Look for agents that ask before important actions, let you set rules, and keep your data private.
What is a multi-agent system?
Several AI agents that split a job and coordinate. Slikie SI's Circle is one example, with the owner able to read and join.
